Soloing Through Chord Tones

Label the chords with the correct inversion.

Identify whether each chord is in root position, first inversion, or second inversion.

Correct Answer: root position
Correct Answer: first inversion
Correct Answer: second inversion

Understand "third inversion".

Third inversion occurs when the seventh of the chord is placed in the bass. While we often think of the seventh as an added extension, in jazz harmony it is frequently treated as an essential chord tone—almost as necessary to the sound of the chord as the root, third, and fifth.
